Securing the Web – Dream On

However, it was one of the final slides with the title “Fixing the Problem?” which really struck home. He made four points, as follows:

• The Internet is fundamentally unsecure
• More secure operating systems, e.g., Windows 7?
• End of Internet anonymity?
• Law enforcement is the key

I thought that it was courageous of him to present such issues, knowing that they might never be resolved, and told him so after the talk. Perhaps Microsoft is leading the way with respect to more secure software and some progress is being made there, although Mr. Schouwenberg’s depiction of Adobe as now being the software of choice for exploitation cast some doubt on the universality of this trend. And perhaps the indictment of the ATM fraudsters might give one hope that law enforcement is getting its act together on a global scale. However, the fundamental issues of the lack of Internet security and the damaging aspects of anonymity and masquerading may not be resolvable in our time.

There was much food for thought in this presentation and a host of topics and ideas for future digestion and discussion. My compliments to the chef!
