Cyberspace Policy Review … Motivating the Private Sector

So it was when I listened to President Obama’s speech on cyber security on May 29, 2006 and began reading the report “Cyberspace Policy Review” issued to the public that same day at www.whitehouse.gov . Don’t get me wrong. I thought that it was a very important speech and that the report is a must-read for every self-respecting information security professional. I won’t comment on the speech or the report until I have read, understood, and absorbed the full report, read more of the many comments on the speech and the report, and discussed them with others.

In this column, I will specifically review some of the immediate reactions by the business community as reported in a May 30, 2009 Wall Street Journal article, “Obama Moves to Curb Data-System Attacks,” by Cam Simpson and August Cole. The industrialists were responding to the president’s statements about not imposing security standards on private companies and collaborating with industry in the search for technology solutions for security problems.
