Here We Go Again … Demoted Security

This seems to be exactly what is happening to the report on the 60-day cybersecurity review which Melissa Hathaway completed on time and which now appears to be languishing as focus turns to the potential flu pandemic, and as turf battles wage within government.

The latter is detailed in a May 1, 2009 Wall Street Journal article by Siobhan Gorman with the title “Cybersecurity Review Sets Turf Battle.” What is perhaps the most disturbing disclosure in the article is that President Obama’s economic adviser, Larry Summers, who heads the National Economic Council, apparently wants to “‘co-lead’ the issue” with the National Security Council. This is tantamount to putting a damper on the entire project.

Dr. Summers is well known as a brilliant, if abrasive, economist. However, the assertion that he effectively wants to back burner the cybersecurity initiative, shows particularly poor judgment.
