The changing of one word in what is supposed to be an “industry standard” has created a lot of confusion. And for that matter, does DLP even work? There are so many different approaches that can cause data to leave your premises; for instance, not a single one has prevented a screenshot of a document labeled CONFIDENTIAL from leaving the system. If the system is going to protect or prevent my data from leaving, it had better do it and at the pace of our imagination.
So what are some of the other favorite buzzwords of mine that boil my blood? Network Behavior Analysis (NBA) is a great technology, however only two of the major players seem to attack this definition in the same manner. Other organizations would like you to think they have a technology that would learn your network, but after all the layers of the onion are peeled back it’s simply a couple of signature matching engines.
The next time you’re at a convention, I recommend that you play buzzword bingo to help sort out the crud and FUD. It will certainly keep you from getting bored at these presentations, and possibly have a little bit of fun.
