Protecting PDAs: A Cautionary Dilemma

Normally, the minimum standard security recommendations for corporate PDAs are:

  1. Lock the device with a pin
  2. Encrypt the data on device

This effectively means that if you loose your PDA it’s now a brick.

The other day I found a unlocked PDA (see images). By accessing this individual’s email I was able to send him a note telling him the device was found. Without the access I could not have returned the phone to its rightful owner. So, choose which is more valuable: the cost of the phone or your data.

I also found an interesting note regarding working with Bill Gates:

I think that I should follow up with a formal draft of accomplishments to Bill Gates. What do you think?

It wasn’t the world’s most wealthy man, though (I checked). Imagine it was.
