Casinos tend to run surprisingly lean in IT. They rely a lot on vendors and consultants who do the heavy lifting with designing and implementing their various sensitive systems. I can see the logic in eliminating the CIO position if the job actually entailed managing a handful of IT support staff and coordinating with vendors.

I agree that the CIO/CSO elimination is a concerning trend, but in this case it may have actually been justified “right sizing” by eliminating executive positions that never needed to exist in the first place.

I wonder how long it will be before there is a major breach at a casino. This will probably denote the ROI of the IT department head. Although in some case the CIO is an executive that only oversees the IT management. Either way organized crime is sure to recognize this and “Ocean 14″ will consist of hacking into the casino.

I wonder what the reporting structure looks like. I’ve seen too many instances where CIO reports into the CFO (or controller) and IT is looked on as an expense not a business enabler.
