Security & Google: Two Articles

The first: MSNBC reports that Google is asking the government to reconsider censorship in financial terms:

Once relatively indifferent to government affairs, Google Inc. is seeking help inside the Beltway to fight the rise of Web censorship worldwide.

The online search giant is taking a novel approach to the problem by asking U.S. trade officials to treat Internet restrictions as international trade barriers, similar to other hurdles to global commerce, such as tariffs.

The second: MSNBC reports that a US General — a deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance — says that Google Earth is a danger to security (US security is implied):

“It is huge,” he said. “It’s something that was a closely guarded secret not that long ago and now everybody’s got access to it.”

Asked if the U.S. military might try to implement restrictions or blackouts on imagery of some areas, Deptula said he was not aware of such an attempt.

Instead, governments are trying to mitigate the effect through camouflage, concealment and deception, he said, providing no other details.
