It’s hard to believe: I purchased the June 2007 issue Playboy magazine for the articles! Yes, it’s true!
After someone alerted me to the fact that a profile of Mitnick was in the magazine and I discovered there was a new short story by Woody Allen as well, I decided to purchase it. (I should note that it was not possible to read the magazine in the store because it is packaged in plastic.)
Both the short story by Allen and the Mitnick profile address information security in some fashion. The Mitnick article addresses it directly and the Allen story through a comedic dialog.
My takeaways from the Mitnick article:
* The famous spoofing attack against Shimomura was actually made by someone named JSZ, not Mitnick
*When Mitnick faced his first serious jail time, the judge rejected the idea that Mitnick should help the government
* Mitnick’s mom has a secret code name of Betty Sue Miller so when he paged her at the Saraha Casino in Las Vegas where she worked as a waitress, she knew to pick up the phone because it was him
* Shimomura was the individual giving John Markoff of the New York Times the details for the NYT articles
As for the Allen short story, he comments on information security in a dialog between a writer and a producer:
[Writer]
“How did you get my number?” I enquired. “It’s unlisted.”
[Producer]
“From the Internet. It’s there alongside the X-rays of your colonoscopy.”
