Not a Good Idea: Large VA breach in future claimed unlikely

According to CSO online,

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is “pretty confident” the agency will not have another large data breach like the one in May that could have exposed the personal records of 26.5 million military veterans and family members, the agency’s chief information officer said Monday.

Yes: thing have changed for the better. Yes: The VA should be applauded for the positive changes they’ve made.

This quote is a bad PR move in the long run: should something happen, people will be less likely to believe their future changes are improving the agency.

The VA would be better off discussing how the risks are being lowered to make it more difficult and less likely that a large data breach will occur. Saying that they are “pretty confident that they will not have another large data breach” is just simply setting one’s self up for future PR issues.
