The Holidays, Online Shopping, ID Theft and FUD!

Before delving into this topic, I would like to mention that I acknowledge there are risks to online shopping as well as the importance in secure development and testing of web/internet applications. It’s a given. What I am about to say is not contradictory to it.

The media sensationalizes web hacks, data privacy leaks and other nasty information security issues in our society. But they do so to a point that ultimately hurts businesses and consumers.

There is a recent eWeek article on Cyber Monday in which nCircle CEO Abe Kleinfeld states that:

IT security professionals know better than anyone the risk inherent in online shopping and this survey data highlights how much work the retail industry must do to ensure a secure online shopping experience.

That’s really a loaded statement.

While I do not have any hard data, a statement like this seems to contradict my perception of the effectiveness of Sarbanes-Oxley within corporate America.

If anything, now seems to be the time when it would be most safe to shop online.

To me, the media’s portrayal of computer crime is greatly exaggerated compared to the real threat. It seems to me that media hype about threats have hurt online business more than necessary.

Did you know that out of those millions and millions of people who suffer from identity theft, only approximately 255,000 reported it to the FTC? Hmmmm!
