What myspace.com security cannot do…

I'm glad that myspace.com added security features that may help protect its younger users . To me, It seems very important that we take steps to make the web a safer environment for everyone.

There is mantra amongst information security professionals: “Technology cannot solve social issues.”

The rate of incidence will decrease as more controls are put into place, but this does not mean that they will cease.

For now, the Associated Press article accurately reflects how myspace.com is still vulnerable: “… MySpace has no mechanism for verifying that users submit their true age when registering. That means adults can sign up as teens and request to join a 14-year-old's list of friends, which would enable the full profiles.” Perhaps the security in myspace.com will change again.

Although the security controls may improve we cannot reasonably expect myspace.com to fully protect its users though technology.

This is a case where end users must be aware that dangers online exist and should know how to protect themselves. In a similar way that our parents taught us “Don't talk to strangers” or “Don't take candy from strangers”, we need to teach children similar rules about online behavior.
